BOOKHAM recorded an impressive win at Badshot Lea to take the three points that has lifted them off the bottom of the table for the first time since October. With centre back Danny Oliver carrying an injury, manager Glyn Mandeville was forced to bring in reserve right back Jake Taylor, allowing the reliable Sam Currie to partner Russell Hartt in the centre of the defence. It was Bookham who started the brighter taking the game to their highly-rated opponents and deservedly took the lead after nine min

The city of Colbert is asking the Madison County Board of Education to hand over an 85-year-old school building so city officials can continue restoring the structure to its former glory. "There's just a lot of potential for this building," said Colbert Mayor Chris Peck, who thinks the old school one day could house a space-crunched city hall and provide much-needed meeting space. "There's a lot of things we can do with it in the community here that we can't now. There's a need for other venues around

Chris Pack is hopeful his Barnesville Shamrocks take away something positive from an otherwise painful experience here Friday evening. One victory from earning a memorable trip to the Division III regional next week at Athens, Barnesville never gave itself a chance against tournament-tested Garaway. Before the Rocks knew what hit them, they were staring at a 16-3 deficit after one period of play.

Had you told us (in November). we'd be playing in a district championship game, I think we would have been pleased   -Chris Pack

Tuesday I received a letter from the U.S. Department of Commerce telling me that in about a week I will receive my 2010 Census form in the mail. I understand the need to do a census, but to waste taxpayer dollars on this mailing in these hard economic times is something I do not understand. How much money was spent to print and send these letters to every street address in the U.S.? I'm sure it must be in the hundreds of thousands, or perhaps millions.

The Vikings couldn't hold off the Panthers in a 60-55 loss in the opening round of the Section 2AA boys basketball tournament in New Richland Tuesday. No. 6 seeded Hayfield (11-15 overall) led by as many as eight points in the first half, but No. 3 New Richland/H/E/G (20-7 overall) poured in 42 second half points to get away with a win. Hayfield missed three three-pointers in the last minute that would've made it a one-point game.

Hull, Comer, Danielsville and now Colbert have all sent money to the non-profit, two-county shelter, which is struggling financially. "We do use them a lot," Colbert Mayor Chris Peck said, "with "(Animal control officer) Jack (Huff) picking animals." All cities donating thus far have given $500, except Danielsville.

The floor in the office area of the depot has been sinking for years. "If you look from the outside, you can tell where the wall is beginning to sag," Mayor Chris Peck said. "And if you stand over there, you can actually see outside where the bottom of the wall meets the floor."
